Attitude of Gratitude, Part II

Nov 8, 2021 | Lifestyle

I am here. You are here. The birds are here. The grass is here. The moon is here. We are all here, and we have worth. Disease is also here, hurricanes are here, unpleasant people are here. How can we show gratitude, even when we are unhappy with outcomes?

To me, honor, or the act of honoring, is about acknowledging worth. Everything and everyone has worth simply because we exist. The trouble is, as humans, and especially in this country, we’ve been conditioned to add value to something or someone’s worth, and each of us have a choice on what that value is. Although that value is completely relative, the more people agree on a common value, more people will prescribe to that idea; for example, you may say currency may hold the highest value in some countries, while not in others.

I honor you by acknowledging that you have, simply because you (or it) exist; and although I may not agree with you or your actions, I am grateful for that contribution to the world, because I am free to place whatever value I choose to, on that experience. For example, we can honor our parents, honor strangers, and honor nature or this earth. However, many of us can attest that some parents are not the best, or that a criminal on the street doesn’t deserve to be honored, or that we do not enjoy each season that nature brings us. What we can agree on, however, is that each of those things has brought us a lesson or added some form of value to our lives, and for that we are grateful. Parents brought us into this world, the criminal taught us how not to behave, and the earth provides a home. And even if you believe there isn’t a lesson in any of those, they were still placed here and have purpose; that is enough.

Honor is without judgment, and I am grateful for the experiences that this way of thinking has brought me.
